I was very impressed with Nicholas Kirstof's NY Times column today on social entrepreneurs at Davos. He highlighted some interesting work that is going on around the world, and more critical in my mind, projects that are conceived, led, and run by women for other women. In fact, social entrepreneurship seems to be an area in which women’s leadership and expertise is not only welcomed, but valued and rewarded. |

Citigroup (C ) offers a membership program to women called Women & Co.. Women & Co. offers “privileged access to professionals and resources that can help you define and work toward your financial goals.” Here are the reasons that Citigroup feels that women need their help for $125 per year: “The statistics don’t lie. The financial facts of a woman’s life are different from a man’s." |

October was a busy month for issues of concern to women. Beyond Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it also marked the passage of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Much like Halloween, Breast Cancer Awareness activities involve trick or treating as hundreds of companies strive to capture women's dollars with empty promises of raising funds for breast cancer "causes." Now that October is behind us, it is clear that the corporations received most of the treats, and the rest of us were tricked. |

A December 2000 story by Katie Dean in Wired noted that new research by University of Michigan B-school professor Theresa Wellborne “found that for rapidly growing IPO companies, the initial stock price, stock price growth, and growth in earnings over three years were higher with women executives.” Wellborne’s report goes on to also note that, “The results from the long-term study indicate that having women on the top management team results in higher earnings and greater shareholder wealth.” So what does this mean? |
