Here in the upper Midwest temperatures have remained low, and nighttime temperatures are still falling into the frost range, a weather pattern that seems ominously persistent as spring approaches with slowly greening trees, and the absence of sunshine and fallow cornfields. |

Right now, there's an Exxon Mobil (XOM) shareholder meeting going on in Texas. If you have proxy votes to cast due to XOM stock, you should be doing so today. And there are some serious fights going on right now.

I attended the NetSquared Year 3 Conference on May 27-28, 2008 in San Jose, CA, right after Memorial Day weekend. I had spent the weekend in Berkeley, CA at my friend Sammy's wedding so I was a little shaky for the meet and greet on Monday night, but Jean Russell from Nurture Girl stepped in as my unofficial political adviser and helped me network within minutes.

"In the U.S., the Euro Area and the U.K., the track record of inflation during the past few years has deteriorated to the point that a material loss of credibility may well be imminent for all three central banks involved - the Fed, the ECB and the Bank of England," wrote Willem Buiter in a recent piece published by the Financial Times.
"Not surprisingly, mean inflation expectation one year ahead (according to the University of Michigan survey) now stand at 5.7 percent. Mean inflation expectations 5 to 10 years ahead are 3.5 percent. Loss of credibility in the Fed’s willingness and/or ability to maintain price stability is a fact - not surprising, given the institution’s willingness to cut rates massively and swiftly when the real economy turned down, despite continuing high inflation."

The N2Y3 2008 Mashup Challenge featured 21 teams competing for funding for initiatives ranging from saving endangered languages to ending genocide. On the first day of the conference each team was permitted two minutes to describe their projects, many of which focused on themes like government transparency and corporate accountability, and all of which rely very heavily on websites and social networking platforms. Mapping proved to be a very popular tool for organizing information.

For the most part, Big Oil is hesitant to embrace alternative energy, preferring instead to push for more drilling. For some, however, it appears that the industry is seeing the writing on the wall. Even Big Oil execs know that the days of fossil fuels may be numbered. As a result, Exxon (XOM) is heading into the business of hybrid car batteries, BP (BP) is investing in jatropha and Chevron (CVX) is looking into solar energy. |
