No More Executive Ban on Offshore Drilling E-mail
Written by Miranda Marquit
Monday, 14 July 2008
On Monday afternoon, President Bush lifted an executive ban on offshore drilling in the United States. (A ban, btw, that his father put into place.) The move, however, was mostly symbolic. Congress also has a ban on offshore drilling, and in order for the ban to be completely lifted, lawmakers have to get on board. Democrats, and even some Republicans (especially those from coastal states) don't seem too keen on the idea.

The New York Times' Socially Irresponsible Book Review E-mail
Written by Michelle Haimoff
Sunday, 13 July 2008
From Liesl Schillinger's New York Times Book Review of Rivka Glachen's Atmospheric Disturbances:

Leo hops a plane to Argentina to find out, using Gal-Chen's research on retrieving "thermodynamic variables from within deep convective clouds" to guide his own blundering "attempts at retrieval" of the "real" Rema. No, this is not chick lit.

It's unusual — in fact (why be coy?), it's extremely rare — to come across a first novel by a woman writer that concerns itself with such quirky, philosophical, didactic explorations; a novel in which the heart and the brain vie for the role of protagonist, and the brain wins. While the voice and mood of the novel are masculine, clinical and objective (Leo registers Rema's distress with detachment, recording it but not feeling it), the book's descriptions of colors, smells, clothing and bodies show feminine perception: Rema's hair has the "smell of grass"; a woman has "wet cement eyes"; a '70s shirt with a butterfly collar has "pearline" fasteners.

Straight Talk about Viagra and Birth Control E-mail
Written by Deborah Evans
Friday, 11 July 2008

Former Hewlett Packard (HPQ $41.27) CEO Carly Fiorina might have blown her chances of being Senator McCain’s Vice Presidential running mate after she told reporters that, as McCain’s campaign advisor, she’s been getting a lot of comments from women who are upset at the unfairness that many health plans cover Viagra (PFE $17.79) but not birth control.

When reporters asked the Republican presidential nominee what he thought about the issue, Senator “Straight Talk” responded, “I certainly do not want to discuss that issue.” McCain was unable to recall that he voted against a 2003 bill that would have required health insurance companies to cover prescription birth control.

A recent article from Reuters states that environmental activists are opening a new frontier in their fight against coal-fired power plants by questioning the use of tax-exempt bonds to help fund such projects.
