Balancing Power: A Profile of the New World Foundation E-mail
Written by Michelle Haimoff
Tuesday, 12 December 2006
"I think everybody's responsible for trying to make the world somewhat better," Colin Greer, President of The New World Foundation (NWF), reflects in his Upper West Side office situated off of the lobby of an elegant prewar building. It is appropriate that The New World Foundation is based in one of the most refined neighborhoods in Manhattan where the money and the power is, because it is this money and power that the foundation is trying to shift from the highest economic strata to the grass roots community based organizations (CBO's) that need it most.Image

Greer describes the NWF as "multi-issue" but primarily concerned with "American communities being democratically run, fully participating in the national polity and being able to martial its own human and financial resources to address the problems it faces". These problems range from racial discrimination, to inadequate schools, to water pollution. However, the problems themselves are secondary. "We're as interested in the democratization and emerging power of communities to speak for themselves as we are in solving the problem."

"So you're helping them help themselves?"

Simply Blue: A Profile of The Blue Fund E-mail
Written by Amy Winn
Tuesday, 12 December 2006

Socially responsible investing is not new. But how about the concept of politically responsible investing?

The Blue Fund , which launched Oct. 17, 2006, is the first SRI index mutual fund to add an overtly political component. Included companies and executive officers not only express progressive ideals, but they also make corporate and personal contributions to the Democratic party, thereby literally putting their money where their mouths are.

Joseph J. Andrew is an expert in mergers and acquisitions law and currently a partner in the law firm Sonnenschein, Nath and Rosenthal LLP . From 1999-2001, he had the high-profile role of chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) . In this position, he publicly contemplated the relationship between corporations and corporate contributions, and saw that the majority of money was going to Republicans and the GOP.

Daily Candy Without the Cavities: A Profile of Ideal Bite E-mail
Written by Jean Marie Hackett
Tuesday, 12 December 2006
I first heard about Ideal Bite , an online eco-minded website, while apartment hunting last summer.  When Heather Stephenson , the company's co-founder and tenant of one of the apartments on my list, handed me her card and explained the environmentally-conscious business behind the green apple logo, I'm sure I stiffened.  I recall wondering if I was carrying plastic or if "carnivore" was written across my forehead.  But Ideal Bite, as I soon found out -- just like its co-founders, Stephenson and Jennifer Boulden -- is not about judgment or granola stereotypes.

"In a nutshell," said Stephenson by phone from San Francisco, Ideal Bite "is a daily email that goes to currently about 65,000 readers, that gives a short, simple tip on how to live a more green lifestyle everyday."  The company, which generates money via advertising and the provision of market research, lives by the maxim "small changes add up," and works to prove that maxim true by sending daily email tips to subscribers -- "irreverent" little insights into living a bit more green, complete with "cocktail facts ," links to a personalized blog , and access to "biter Mascot" Cricket the dog .  More realistic than idealistic, Ideal Bite strives to make change by providing inspiration to the "light green" consumer -- those of us drowning in the plastic water bottles, disposable Starbucks cups, and SUVs of our frenetic modern day lives.
