One of the big issues right now -- even though oil and gas prices are dropping -- is fuel efficiency. Many automakers are trying to come up with more creative ways to improve fuel efficiency in cars. In a way, this is a smart move. After all, even if oil prices do make it back down to $100 a barrel by year's end, one would hope that Americans have learned a very valuable lesson about relying too much on limited resources. Companies that work to embrace technology that will help consumers save money on their transportation costs will be better positioned in the long run.

Remember when you used to dream about taking the field for your favorite professional sports team?  You spent hours in the backyard rehearsing how you'd come through in clutch situations, neglecting the homework you'd never need to do anyway once you signed your first big contract.  Unfortunately for most of us, the dream faded relatively quickly.  However, Forbes' recent ranking of the most lucrative Major League Baseball teams reminds everyone that the business of owning a professional franchise can pay serious dividends.  The National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), and the National Basketball Association (NBA) generated a combined $14.1 billion of revenue in 2005 and analysts expect that number to rise as all three leagues continue to expand their appeal around the globe.

If you're looking for a way to profit from clean energy, look to buy the companies that are filing the most clean energy patents. According to a study by an intellectual property law firm in Albany, Heslin Rothenberg Farley & Mesiti P.C., the top spots were taken by Honda Motor Company (HMC - $34.78), followed by General Electric (GE - $29.12) and General Motors (GM - $15.61).

Interestingly, most of the clean energy patents are being filed by automobile companies and not energy companies.

Of the list, I like GE and Honda the best. Honda has one of the world's most innovative research departments and a very low P/E of 10 that reflects fears about a U.S. slowdown. Honda is also the Japanese auto manufacturer most dependent on the U.S. market.
