Last Summer's Gas Price Spike: FTC Says Big Oil did not Conspire

One of the things that I wondered during the summer of 2006 as a gas price spike pushed prices higher was whether Big Oil was engaging in a little gouging. Apparently plenty of other people, including some in the government, wondered whether Exxon (XOM), Chevron (CVX), Conoco-Philips (COP) and other Big Oil players had conspired to drive up the cost of gasoline. After all, 2006 was a record year for the oil and gasoline industry.

Is Big Oil ready for its end-of-summer rally? You bet! The stock market is a fickle market; always up and down. And individual stocks are the same way. Energy stocks are especially fickle. But as tropical storms appear to threaten the Texas Gulf Coast, it means that oil company stock is ready to rise. As the Washington Post reports:

The Gulf Coast houses many oil and natural gas installations, and traders will be on alert for any sign that a storm could threaten those operations, interrupting supplies.

List of Safe High Dividend Stocks

I'm always on the lookout for new value screens (a screen is a way of filtering stocks for certain characteristics that might mean they have positive profit potential). I found a list that works well for people who live off dividends:  23 Safe Dividend Stocks by Alan Brochstein at Seeking Alpha.  He explains his methodology quite well.

Several of the names on his list are contained in the Neubert Portfolio.  Heck, it might even make a nice list for a shareholder activist, though it does lack Monsanto and the big money center banks, current targets of shareholder activisim.

Disclosure:  I own the following names from Allan Brochstein's list of 23 high dividend paying stocks: CVX, COP, HD, and JNJ. I have been eyeing AIT as a potential buy.
