It will come as a surprise to no one that the media has caught on to the “green movement” in a big way this year. It is difficult to pass by a news stand without seeing at least one magazine touting an article about what is really going on in this space.

While many of these articles rehash the same information, interview the same people and generally are less than illuminating, it is important for those trying to explore the world of SRI, CSR, clean energy and all related topics to keep tabs on what is being written. To that effect, I bring you two recent reports made up of several articles exploring the private sector’s shift toward the responsible, social, environmental and otherwise.

When you see "Made in China" on a product, what is your first instinct?  Put the product down and move on to another?  Barely notice and put it in your shopping basket?  Look at other products, realize how much more they cost, and begrudgingly buy the Chinese one?  While the desire to avoid Chinese products is several years old, the past year's recalls has put extra attention on the quality of Chinese exports that Americans continue to gorge ourselves on.  The media, particularly in headlines, has placed most of the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Chinese government's push for economic growth at any cost.  But are we overlooking more basic personal and policy choices that have lead us here?

After reading “Message in a Bottle” by Charles Fishman in the July issue of Fast Company, I questioned whether the article would be widely discussed by bloggers and other people interested in the environment. Even though bottled water is ubiquitous, particularly on these scorching July days, is an article that questions the validity of both the industry and its consumers an appealing draw for a mass audience? I'm unsure. But I will say the issue has certainly spread to more quarters. Recently San Francisco banned city government offices from buying bottled water, and New York City announced an ad campaign to entice people back to drinking NYC tap water. The New York Times ran an article on the issue this past Sunday. And just yesterday while at the gym, I saw a piece on bottled water on one of those business shows (they all blend together for me). This story is certainly not new, but the convergence of all this media at once has definitely brought the issue to more prominence.
