Taking Lomborg Seriously

The NYTimes is featuring an article today on Bjorn Lomborg's take on climate change.

While the content won't be unfamiliar to most people who follow the issue, let me quote the gist of it:

“Wealth is a more important factor than sea-level rise in protecting you from the sea. You can draw maps showing 100 million people flooded out of their homes from global warming, but look at what’s happened here in New York. It’s the same story in Denmark and Holland — we’ve been gaining land as the sea rises.”

...

In his new book, he dismisses the Kyoto emissions cuts as a “feel-good” strategy because it sounds virtuous and lets politicians make promises they don’t have to keep. He outlines an alternative “do-good” strategy that would cost less but accomplish more in dealing with climate change as well as more pressing threats like malaria, AIDS, polluted drinking water and malnutrition.

...

But preparing for the worst in future climate is expensive, which means less money for the most serious threats today — and later this century. You can imagine plenty of worst-case projections that have nothing to do with climate change, as Dr. Lomborg reminded me at the end of our expedition.

The Powerlessness of Green

When we see a documentary that tells us how limited our time is before the world implodes, our first thought is, “Wow,” and the second is, “Let’s see who called my cell phone while I was at that documentary.”

The reason for this is that we, as a society, do not have the resolve to stop a problem 50 or 25 or even 10 years before it affects us. This is not because we’re selfish brutes only interested in our own best interest, though of course we are, but rather because we are shortsighted. We put things off until we absolutely have to deal with them, and then we put things off some more.

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has the authority to regulate carbon dioxide emmisions. The ruling means the EPA must regulate automobile CO2 emissions unless that agency can show the science of global warming is too uncertain to justify action. Although few expect the ruling to lead to immediate regulatory action, the decision has provided strong momentum to alternative energy stocks since Tuesday.

The State of the Union and Alternative Energy

On Monday night, President George W. Bush gave his seventh and final State of the Union address (eighth if you count the inauguration speech back in 2001). But before I continue, I would like to issue the disclaimer that this weblog is not designed to be an in-depth critique of our president's speech. There are plenty of other bloggers out there that are providing that. Instead, I wanted to comment on one particular section of the speech -- the alternative energy section. Especially given that this subject has been receiving increasingly more air time in recent State of the Union addresses.
