A policy shift at Conde Nast is the second of my three aspirational and fictional ideas that are (relatively) cheap, that would make concrete environmental gains, that could be accomplished almost instantaneously by motivated people in positions of power (by phone calls, in two cases), and that would immediately set an agenda for the next election.

CSR: The Movement Gains Momentum

I recently read a smart and pertinent cover story by Paula L. Green at Global Finance Magazine  about business' movement towards greater enactment of CSR and its importance to the bottom line now and in the future.

Green discusses the impact of the United Nations Global Compact since its inception in July of 2000, and cites real world scenarios involving the negative impact of poor CSR. The article includes interviews with several corporate employees leading their organizations toward responsibility.

Green ties the varied policies and opinions together nicely and makes it obvious that CSR must become a core policy in the corporate world and global business.

Dell and Google: Way to Go Green!

ENN, the Environmental News Network, recently announced that Dell (DELL - $19.53), the world's largest mail-order computer vendor and maker of the infinitely adaptable Dell PC and laptop computers, was running its 2.1-million square foot Round Rock facility entirely on renewable energy.

Does Ford Get the Concept Behind "Green"?

In 2000, Ford Motor Company (F - $5.92) sponsored Time Magazine's Earth Day edition, Heroes for the Planet, and issued a statement declaring that it would henceforth spend as much on its environmental image as it would promoting a new model car. Ford also promised to reduce emissions.

Last week, a funny thing happened on the way to the mailbox. A memo, meant for Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY - $51.22) attorney Bradford Berenson (who is helping negotiate a private settlement for Lilly with the government), went instead to Alex Berenson of the New York Times.
