Someone once joked that the best cure for insomnia is to get a lot of sleep, but somehow I don't find that funny at the moment. If you're a homeowner in pain, you might also be struggling to sleep. You might be dreaming of a parallel world where Fed chairman Ben Bernanke saves the day, but you're more likely to wake up with a nasty housing market hangover when Bernanke speaks on the housing market tomorrow morning at 10am ET.

If you are predicting an Armageddon-style collapse of the once glorious U.S. dollar, it may be time for a reality check. The most recent Economist points out:

The dollar's place as a reserve currency always seems to be questioned when it falls. Weakness in 1977-79, 1985-88 and 1993-95 was each time met with predictions that governments were about to switch their reserves into another currency.

If the dollar has survived previous onslaughts, why are we so quick to dismiss the currency this time around?

Venezuela Joins Others in Switching from U.S. Dollar

Petroleos de Venezuela SA (also known as PDVSA - PVZ.YY), the state-run oil company (and parent of the U.S. Citgo) of Venezuela is being instructed to switch its accounts from U.S. dollars into euros. This is just another country in a line of countries that are steering oil from the U.S. dollar and requesting that investments and transactions be made in other currencies. Bloomberg reports on this move by Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez:
