Could It be JP Morgan Buying Bear Common?

Could it be a Holy Mystery, like they told you in Catholic school, for anything that couldn't be explained?  Steve Randy Waldman at Interfluidity.com has another theory on why Bear Stearns (BSC - $5.94) is trading above the $2.00.  He offers up god, oh I mean Jamie Dimon, channeling J.P. Morgan.  Could The House of Morgan be the one buying shares above the deal price to vote them their own way?  I love the idea but I see securities law problems with that theory.  I don't think JP Morgan would risk that.

I'll be watching to see what Mr Waldman comes up with next.

Disclosure:  I own BSC.  I own Bear Stearn Preferred shares.  I am short 10 strike calls on BSC and long 15 strike calls.  I own JPM.  I did not go to Catholic school.

Creative Job Seeker in Union Square

I often see people begging for money in New York.  Today I saw a guy with a handwritten sign on a street corner outside The Coffee Shop in Union Square.  He wasn't asking for money, he was asking for a job as a director/actor/filmmaker.  Now this is what I call marketing.

Thomas O'Connor from Colorado came to New York in search of a place to put his creative talents to work.  Currently staying with friends in Jersey City, he has taken a novel approach to job hunting.  He is holding a handwritten sign on a street corner.  When asked how it's been going he replied, "I got some business cards yesterday and need to make some calls."  Sadly, he doesn't write about stocks or investing or he'd be writing a blog for The Panelist right now, though he is web savvy enough to have his own web page and a Myspace page promoting himself (We, at The Panelist, don't even have our own MySpace page yet).

Thomas O'Connor Tom, I may not have a job for you but I hope this little promotion helped.

Disclosure:  The Panelist has not yet moved into film but we're thinking about it.  The Panelist is not a job site but if you're interested in writing for us, we are always looking for financially oriented bloggers.

Criticizing Buffett for Being a Good Guy

I know, let's bash Warren Buffett for supporting Obama. That is what James Altucher does in showing all the ways that Obama policies benefit Buffett at the expense of everyone else.

In his list of examples, he includes that Obama's (and Buffett's) support of the inheritance tax is good for for Buffett since he plans to give away most of his money to charities.

Dal LaMagna for President - A Candidate With a Corporate Social Responsibility Platform

Dal LaMagnaWe, at The Panelist, are planning to endorse a Republican, Democrat and "Other Party" candidates before the primaries kick off.  We've been watching John Edwards, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama with interest.  Today another candidate popped onto our radar, Dal LaMagna.  He is a very progressive candidate for the Democratic nomination and doens't seem to be getting the press or recognition of even last place runner Dennis Kucinich.  I was directed to LaMagna's site by a friend who met him with me in 2004.  While he may not have any a bio full of government experience or much of a chance to win the nomination candidate like Mr. LaMagna deserve our attention because they make the rest of us think.  Outside candidates also tend to add items to the platforms of the full time fund raisers (um, I mean front runners). Of all the candidates he is the first I've seen to actually have a platform on Corporate Social Responsibility - we have to admire him for that.

So you don't have our endorsement at this time, but The Panelist will be watching you Dal LaMagna.
