"I am probably the only economist left in the world who still believes that a U.S. recession is likely to be avoided," says Kaletsky. Given the massive amount of doom and gloom in the financial press, it's important to try to understand the contrarian argument.

Crude oil prices dropped today by 4.5%, the most in seven months, as investors bet that U.S. summer fuel demand has peaked. Given the large size of speculative long positions in the market, further downward pressure in the short-term cannot be ruled out. The price of oil is one of the major factors in the valuation of alternative energy stocks. Higher oil prices increase demand for alternative energy, while lower oil prices could lead to investors questioning some of the lofty valuations in the sector.

Is it fair that America, with 4% of the world’s population, uses 25% of global energy? As a South African, I don’t think so. I am excited about the prospect of economic growth in my home country, but I sometimes wonder where the energy will come from if America keeps unfairly extracting energy at the expense of everyone else.
