In 2000, Ford Motor Company (F - $5.92) sponsored Time Magazine's Earth Day edition, Heroes for the Planet, and issued a statement declaring that it would henceforth spend as much on its environmental image as it would promoting a new model car. Ford also promised to reduce emissions.

Exxon Mobil (XOM) is not known for its environmental record. Indeed, many environmentally-friendly investors feel that Exxon could be doing much more in terms of alternative energy investment. And, interestingly, that is what XOM has been doing the past three decades. XOM just hasn't been doing it in an area where we usually think to look. The Wall Street Journal reports on Exxon's efforts to remain diversified as alternative energy comes to the fore:

Just as Ford (F) started to make some headway in its extensive rebuilding program, the Dearborn automaker incurred a noteworthy legal headache from an important engine supplier.  Illinois-based holding company Navistar (NAVZ.PK) filed a $2 billion suit against Ford alleging breach of contract by the automaker for trying to develop its own diesel engine despite an agreement to buy Navistar's Power Stroke powertrain through 2012.  Navistar's claim comes in response to Ford's January lawsuit contending that Navistar hadn't paid warranty costs.

Reader Question:

David Neubert,

I am thinking about buying some Ford preferred stock symbol (F-PS).  Do you think
its still a good investment?  I sold all my market holdings early that Thursday morning, a few weeks ago, before the market begin to really take a dive. Now I want to get back in with some good stocks.

Old Ford Motor LogoFrank,

Thanks for your question.  As you might know, an enhanced conversion exchange for this Ford Motor Co Cap Trust II 6.50% Preferred (P-FS - $38.86)  for Ford Common (F - $8.06) just ended.  I did not participate in the exchange.

Since I am not your financial advisor and do not know the details of your specific financial situation I cannot tell you if these securities are right for you.   What I can tell you is what I'm doing.  I continue to hold the Preferred shares.  I've owned them for years.  I hold them in both my tax deferred IRA (because these are not qualified dividends - no tax advantage) and my taxable account.  But these are risky assets and should not be treated like a safe bond.  They make up less than 1% of my total investment portfolio.
