I fondly remember the first (and only) time I went to the International Auto Show in Detroit. On that blustery Saturday morning in January 1997, I had recently begun my last semester of college and I was lamenting with a couple of friends about how we had never been to the largest and most famous auto show in the country. So, without much ado, we decided to climb into a car and drive one hour east to the Motor City.

I tuned in mid-Sarah Silverman, who was already deconstructing Britney 2.0, who had just gotten offstage. MTV (VIA), where the target demographic has drifted down to tween girls (largely because of the influence of Britney 1.0) now has the awkward problem of trying to recover buzz for a TV channel in a MySpace (NWS) world. And so the setting was the Palms in Las Vegas, America’s city of the future. Vegas is both a-historical and could be powered by the sun (WFC) (see also here and here), so it’s a place to watch (unlike the spent cultural dinosaurs of New York and LA).

You'd probably shrug it off and keep going because you can't eat anything else without feeling unfulfilled. But after awhile, the emptiness in your wallet cancels out the satisfaction you feel in your stomach. The same goes for the automotive industry. Gas prices have risen 33% over the last 11 weeks to $2.87 per gallon as of late April 2007, prompting concerns that prices could hit $4 within the next few months. In response, GM (GM) and DaimlerChrysler (DCX) plan to introduce smaller models known as microcars as a more fuel-efficient alternative for drivers seeking shelter from the rising petroleum tide.
