As a symbol of our cultural moment, the MTV Video Music Awards program Sunday September 10 was unexpectedly complex. I tuned in mid-Sarah Silverman, who was already deconstructing Britney 2.0, who had just gotten offstage. MTV (VIA), where the target demographic has drifted down to tween girls (largely because of the influence of Britney 1.0) now has the awkward problem of trying to recover buzz for a TV channel in a MySpace (NWS) world. And so the setting was the Palms in Las Vegas, America’s city of the future. Vegas is both a-historical and could be powered by the sun (WFC) (see also here and here), so it’s a place to watch (unlike the spent cultural dinosaurs of New York and LA).

ENN, the Environmental News Network, recently announced that Dell (DELL - $19.53), the world's largest mail-order computer vendor and maker of the infinitely adaptable Dell PC and laptop computers, was running its 2.1-million square foot Round Rock facility entirely on renewable energy.

Google (GOOG) Gets Into Alternative Energy Investing

There are a lot of thoughts out there about alternative energy, especially now that oil prices are going up again. And one of the latest forays into alternative energy is being conducted by Google (GOOG).

Google, through its charitable arm Google.org, has offered almost $11 million for research on geothermal energy. And this large amount makes Google a larger investor in geothermal energy than even the U.S. government. The potential for geothermal energy is also rather huge, reports Scientific American:
