Listening to Market Predictions: Do Not Get Caught Picking Your Bottom

The media is having a field day with the market decline. People who wouldn't normally be interested are watching CNBC or Bloomberg TV and reading the business section. If you are making predictions of Dow 2000 or Dow 1000 you will get on TV or quoted in the newspaper. Now there is also a big incentive to call the bottom of the market. The person who randomly picks the bottom will become famous but many who follow the predictions of bottom pickers will get nothing but losses. There is an old Wall Street saying that goes: "Don't pick your nose and don't pick bottoms."

What is the right thing to do?

If you have a 401k:

Newscorp (NWS) Hunting Yahoo (YHOO)?

I don't know how true rumors of Newscorp (NWS - $23.74) negotiating to own a piece of Yahoo (YHOO - $27.91) got started, but it would definitely be a postive for the stock.  It would mean that management had a shareholder who would always be lighting a fire under their butts.  I'd love to have Murdoch as a partner but at the rumored 30% of Yahoo that Newscorp would get for trading Myspace - it doesn't seem like a very good deal for Yahoo.

Art Chang is amazed that Google's (GOOG - $616.32) market cap now exceeds Time Warner (TWX - $19.10), Disney (DIS - $35.39), and News Corp (NWS - $24.48), combined. He's right to be amazed, but when you think about it from the point of view of someone buying a business, it's not that amazing.

Google (GOOG - $616.32) is in a growth business, those other companies are not.

A recent WSJ article points out that the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 82% since the last bull market began on October 9, 2002. It feels like a lifetime ago, but U.S. stocks hit record highs just three weeks ago. Given the strong run the bull market has had, there are still more bulls than bears out there, so brace yourself for more downside as bulls cash in.

The current market turmoil has not fully run its course. And given the close correlation between divorce and market volatility, marriages could follow the stock market down the tubes.
