My inner contrarian says, "read all about it!"  My inner value investor says, "run away!"

Notes on Google

Art Chang is amazed that Google's (GOOG - $616.32) market cap now exceeds Time Warner (TWX - $19.10), Disney (DIS - $35.39), and News Corp (NWS - $24.48), combined. He's right to be amazed, but when you think about it from the point of view of someone buying a business, it's not that amazing.

Google (GOOG - $616.32) is in a growth business, those other companies are not.

Out of Yahoo and Other Options

Realizing that in the short run Yahoo management doesn't seem to have my best interest at heart, I sold all of my Yahoo! (YHOO - $28.67 ) shares at around $28.75, which allows me to lock in most of the merger premium if inaction by Yahoo management drives the stock back to $20.  Just in case, I did pay just over a buck for 30 strike calls.  If someone does pay up, I will at least get to participate in the upside.

Randall Smyth makes an interesting case for a potential eBay (EBAY - 26.74) Yahoo tie up.  While the tie up may be good for the competitive marketplace, it doesn't seem to do as much for Yahoo shareholders as Microsoft (MSFT - $28.12) was willing to do.

For my favorite and most articulate coverage of Microsoft Yahoo Merger, see Henry Blodget at Silicon Alley Insider.

Disclosure: I own EBAY and MSFT.  I own 30 strike calls on YHOO that expire in April and July.  I am short (sold) January 2009 40 strike calls on eBay.

Satellite Wars: Episode IV

The debate continues on the merger of XM (XMSR ) and Sirius (SIRI ) Satellite Radio as the case again comes before the Senate Committee on Commerce for round four since its original proposition in February. Opponents argue that the merger will create a monopoly, leaving a sole provider for satellite service to consumers. This, they argue, will lead to increased prices and decreased content. Advocates argue that the merger is necessary in order to compete against other technologies, including terrestrial radio, MP3 players, CD/DVD etc. The inference is that the battle between the two small companies for the limited audience is splitting the market and preventing its advance against the other technologies.

The Imus Effect

Unless you've turned off your TV or sworn off the Internet for the past couple of weeks, you probably know about the recent Don Imus controversy.  If you haven't heard about it, the long-time radio shock jock made an off-hand comment on the air about the Rutgers women's basketball team, referring to the predominantly African-American players as "nappy-headed hos."  CBS (CBS) initially suspended Imus for two weeks, then fired him in the wake of serious public backlash led by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.  The uproar over the incident reminded all of us about the thin line between free speech and unwarranted verbal venom.
