A Reasonable Review of An Unreasonable Man
Written By: Michelle Haimoff

In fairness, An Unreasonable Man offers both perspectives on Ralph Nader; the “wicked”-ly naïve megalomaniac that cost Gore the 2000 election, and the idealist who stands up to government even in unfashionable times.  It is not shocking that more screen time is given to the latter.

Bright Leaves, a documentary of North Carolina’s tobacco legacy, is a personal project of filmmaker Ross McElwee. As such, it is part documentary, part home video, part miscellaneous. One’s enjoyment of the film depends largely on the one’s tolerance of McElwee himself, who ranges from moderately funny to distractedly self-absorbed.

Evan Almighty?

This is a follow up to my piece on the feature film Evan Almighty, starring Steve Carrell.

In investment terms, this movie was a complete loss, a bomb, a stinker. Universal ponied up $175 million for the feature, not to mention an additional $50 million or so in marketing. To date, this movie has grossed $157 million worldwide! It's the kind of failure that in any other business, people would lose there jobs for. However, Hollywood is one of those towns where as long as you fail huge enough and spend enough money you'll keep your studio job, keep getting hired as an actor or director and actually get a raise! Yeah, it's a weird place.

Now the good news is that Evan Almighty was nominated. No, not for an Oscar but for the best feature film by the Environmental Media Association. Yep, apparently the EMA honors the most environmentally friendly film and tv projects and Evan Almighty was one of them!

I love it! Can you imagine the pitch meeting for this one? Let's create an organization that gives an award to a movie that sucks, loses an enormous amount of money, but was "green" while doing it. Wow, those Hollywood people really are clever!

The award show will air on E! on November 7th.

Disclosure: I'll be driving my gas guzzling, V8, SUV to Laguna Beach tomorrow to cover a web/media conference while throwing trash out the window, driving down the 405.....Hey, I'm just being honest here (the trash part was a joke people).
