Carbon and "The Good Life"

As a symbol of our cultural moment, the MTV Video Music Awards program Sunday September 10 was unexpectedly complex. I tuned in mid-Sarah Silverman, who was already deconstructing Britney 2.0, who had just gotten offstage. MTV (VIA), where the target demographic has drifted down to tween girls (largely because of the influence of Britney 1.0) now has the awkward problem of trying to recover buzz for a TV channel in a MySpace (NWS) world. And so the setting was the Palms in Las Vegas, America’s city of the future. Vegas is both a-historical and could be powered by the sun (WFC) (see also here and here), so it’s a place to watch (unlike the spent cultural dinosaurs of New York and LA).

Creative Job Seeker in Union Square

I often see people begging for money in New York.  Today I saw a guy with a handwritten sign on a street corner outside The Coffee Shop in Union Square.  He wasn't asking for money, he was asking for a job as a director/actor/filmmaker.  Now this is what I call marketing.

Thomas O'Connor from Colorado came to New York in search of a place to put his creative talents to work.  Currently staying with friends in Jersey City, he has taken a novel approach to job hunting.  He is holding a handwritten sign on a street corner.  When asked how it's been going he replied, "I got some business cards yesterday and need to make some calls."  Sadly, he doesn't write about stocks or investing or he'd be writing a blog for The Panelist right now, though he is web savvy enough to have his own web page and a Myspace page promoting himself (We, at The Panelist, don't even have our own MySpace page yet).

Thomas O'Connor Tom, I may not have a job for you but I hope this little promotion helped.

Disclosure:  The Panelist has not yet moved into film but we're thinking about it.  The Panelist is not a job site but if you're interested in writing for us, we are always looking for financially oriented bloggers.

Newscorp (NWS) Hunting Yahoo (YHOO)?

I don't know how true rumors of Newscorp (NWS - $23.74) negotiating to own a piece of Yahoo (YHOO - $27.91) got started, but it would definitely be a postive for the stock.  It would mean that management had a shareholder who would always be lighting a fire under their butts.  I'd love to have Murdoch as a partner but at the rumored 30% of Yahoo that Newscorp would get for trading Myspace - it doesn't seem like a very good deal for Yahoo.

Notes on Google

Art Chang is amazed that Google's (GOOG - $616.32) market cap now exceeds Time Warner (TWX - $19.10), Disney (DIS - $35.39), and News Corp (NWS - $24.48), combined. He's right to be amazed, but when you think about it from the point of view of someone buying a business, it's not that amazing.

Google (GOOG - $616.32) is in a growth business, those other companies are not.
