SPWR - Good Companies are Not Always Good Investments

SunPower (SPWR - $46.40) has been on a medium uptrend since the September 2006 low of $26, and after strong gains in the last few sessions on the back of above average trading volumes, the share price is testing the all time high of $48. Bank of America (BAC), DeutscheBank (DB), Citigroup (C) and Thomas Weisel (TWPG) are among the cheerleaders for the stock, all saying that SunPower's prospects are among the brightest in the solar sector. While the stock is testing its all time high, I can't help wondering if this good company is a good investment.

On April 26 SunPower (SPWR - Last trade $59.55) reported knockout Q1 results. This was the first quarter that SPWR reported results consolidated with PowerLight following its January 10th acquisition. The company reported EPS of $0.29/share, blowing away the street's estimate of $0.19/share (a lower tax rate allowed for EPS upside to the quarter). Non-GAAP revenues for the quarter were $143.2 million, also beating estimates at $127.7 million. SPWR also guided Q2 and FY07 ahead of street estimates, and the share price has moved from an April 26 low of $57.02 to a high of $59.55 on April 27.

The first thing I saw was a panel of talking heads discussing whether the Fed was going to cut interest rates at their next meeting. Both sides offered compelling arguments, and by the end of the discussion I felt more confused about the Fed than I did before turning on the TV.

SPWR Sinks After Q2 Earnings: Have Investors Forgotten to Read the Fine Print?

Earnings season is once again upon us, and the losses on subprime mortgages still continue to have a negative spill-over on the stock market. SunPower (SPWR - Last trade $68.71) reported ahead of the opening bell, and shares tanked. SPWR August option implied volatility moved up to 57 before the start of trade, above its 6-month average of 38, according to Track Data, suggesting larger risk. By the end of the day SPWR shares lost 1.84%, staging only a modest recovery in the afternoon. These losses are even more significant given the rally we saw in U.S. stocks today, with the DOW ending above 14,000. Given the sky-high valuation on SPWR, does this pullback in SPWR present a buying opportunity?
