Solar Panel on Berkshire House Fellow The Panelist contibutor Eben Esterhuizen asks and clearly answers "no" to the question, "Will Recession Lead to A Solar Depression? "  To take Eben's analysis a little further, I thought I'd deliniate the factors that do affect the solar industry. Every investor should have an opinion about this list before throwing money after lofty hopes for a clean energy revolution.

Factors affecting the viability of the solar energy industry (in order of importance):
1. Government subsidy/incentives.
2. The amount of sunlight hitting the earth.
3. Technological innovation in solar energy conversion.
4. Energy Prices in this order (gas, coal, oil).
5. Economic Activity (or lack thereof in a recession).

Another day, another note on a Chinese solar stock. With the exception of SolarFun (SOLF - Last trade $9.69), I still feel that the market hasn't separated the winners from the losers in the Chinese solar crowd. Is Trina Solar (TSL - Last trade $47.12) a winner? Today's trading was very interesting, with TSL suddenly moving north and approaching its 50-day moving average.

TSL: Greater Transparency Could Spark Near-Term Rally

Solar stocks have seen a sharp pullback since the start of 2008, and short-term rallies from current levels should be expected.

Upcoming catalysts for near-term rallies include the announcement of new supply deals, better than expected earnings results, short squeezes and the potential for supportive legislation. The more important question investors will need to ask: Are solar fundamentals deteriorating? Banc of America analyst Eric Brown recently suggested that solar will soon follow the trend of ethanol stocks, where attractive valuations can be trumped by deteriorating industry fundamentals. Several analysts have criticized the Banc of America note, arguing that solar stocks will continue to shine.

Yesterday, the World Bank said that China has the capacity to absorb the impact of the recent international financial market turmoil if it spreads to its robust economy. "Even if the financial crisis brings about a global economic slowdown, it will help China to adjust its pace of economic development," said Louis Kuijs, senior economist for World Bank's China office. Will Chinese solar stocks benefit from this momentum?

Have you been itching to buy FirstSolar (FSLR - Last trade $112.05), but nervous to get on board with the stock going hyperbolic? If yes, I have some great news. Barrons just did a front page story on how FSLR "may get singed". Given the stock's unbelievable run over recent weeks, investors are likely to bag some profits ahead of the Q2 earnings release on July 30. As suggested before, if we had to see a FSLR pullback it would be a buy signal.
