Is the commodity bubble about to pop? Edward Hadas at BreakingViews.com argues that commodities have become the last refuge for speculators as other bubbles have popped. But it looks like the party is now over.

The Economist talks about the biological reasons why so many people believe in God, gods and religion in general.

Still trying to understand last week's Fed rate cut? Joachim Fels at Morgan Stanley rejects the notion that the smaller-than-anticipated rate cut reflects an attempt to save some ammunition. "Back in June 2002, the Fed staff produced a widely circulated study of the Japan deflationary experience of the 1990s, which concluded that policymakers should become more aggressive in reducing the target rate as it approaches zero – not less."

Anatole Kaletsky, a columnist at The New York Times, asks: Did last week mark the beginning of the end of the credit crunch, or merely the end of the beginning? Has the “liquidity crisis” that started last August in the U.S. mortgage market degenerated into a “solvency crisis” for the global banking system as a whole?

Paul Krugman at The New York Times takes a jab at the U.S. presidential candidates. "We’re now in the midst of an epic financial crisis, which ought to be at the center of the election debate. But it isn’t."

September Madness: At Least Something Fun Comes Out of Crisis

The NCAA basketball tournament is one of the biggest events of the year on Wall Street. I've heard of millions changing hands buying and selling teams like stocks throughout the elimination rounds. Shorting is allowed as well as buying. Nearly all the trades are on credit (no money down). I've heard of floor brokers on the NYSE who only work one month a year as bookies for the Final Four. Millions of dollars change hands at settlement (after the tournament is over and a winner is determined). Nearly all of that is in cash.

According to TechCrunch this .jpg was reportedly created by Mark Slavonia at Sansome Partners.

The Story of Stuff

I have a list of about 100 movies I've never gotten around to seeing so I know all about putting things off. But even I managed to make time for this 20 minute fast-paced video about stuff.

It sounds like a weird premise but that's literally what it's about. Our stuff. Where it comes from. Where it goes. And why that matters. Cynics will appreciate that there is no emotional or ethical appeal to save our planet, just straight facts in a conversational tone. You will learn a lot in 20 minutes. Trust me. I hated An Inconvenient Truth. But this is the kind of thing everyone would want to see:

Disclosure: This isn't really a disclosure but I just wanted to point out that you're not really doing anything else for the next 20 minutes so just watch it. By the time you come up with something else to do (or say you're gonna do), 20 minutes will have passed.
